Otterday! And Open Thread.

Today’s otter was photographed at the Marwell Zoo/Wildlife Park in the UK, by Digimist.

Closeup of an upright sunlit gorgeous otter with its eyes closed and face tilted away, as if saying 'I know I'm beautiful, but I'm sick of the photos'.

Please feel free to use this thread to natter about anything your heart desires. Is there anything great happening in your life? Anything you want to get off your chest? Reading a good book (or a bad one)? Anything in the news that you’d like to discuss? What have you created lately? Commiserations, felicitations, temptations, contemplations, speculations? How did Friday the 13th treat you yesterday?

  1. I have two firsts this week:
First time visiting the women’s room at the university, where there are awesome feminist-y things hung everywhere and sofas and airconditioning. *sigh* I’m hoping to get involved with the women’s collective ther.e
And I bought a suit! You know a skirt-jacket girly suit. It’s awesome and makes me look super professional. Now I just need to find an occasion to wear it to. But the jacket looks cool with jeans as well. I am very excited to have a suit now.

  2. Jo, I think you are at USyd? My daughter’s at Unimelb – just completed second year – and she’s joined a feminist group on campus. Makes a cranky old feminist mother fairly tear up, it does, especially when she and her Dad went off with the van to deliver an armchair to the Womens room. Bless!

  3. I got into the course I applied for 😀 I was pretty sure I would, because it’s external study, but the confirmation came through yesterday, so I can stop worrying about it 😛
(and start worrying about whether the enrolment instructions will come through before the semester starts…)

  4. Helen, I’m actually at UQ in Brisbane, it’s closer to home for me. I love it there though, and now that I know there is a women’s collective it will be even more fun. As it happens though, I am flying to Sydney tomorrow for a week of latin summer school at USyd, which coincidentally means that I’ll be able to come to the Coogee beach meetup. I’m really looking forward to it!
Well done on your course acceptance, Freya! What will you be studying?

  5. Congratulations Freya!
Since we’re talking about university collectives, I’ll be running the RMIT Queer Collective this year! I’m really excited, and looking forward to organising lots of funky events. Does anyone know where I can get kittens for hire?
Househunting is tiring. A few days ago I saw the perfect place: a converted bakery, close to the city, and pets welcome! I called them up, but I think I was a bit over-enthusiastic. Don’t think I’ll hear from them again. Gah!

  6. I’ve had an awesome weekend so far – AdaCamp yesterday with a room full of about 50 other women excited about open tech and open culture generally and full of ideas about how we could enhance collaborations between women in open stuff while cross-pollinating with supporting each other and women generally in more proprietary environments as well. With large dollops of broader social justice considerations and culture-jamming well stirred in and lightly dusted with patriarchy-smash(tm).
One of the goals for”what to do next” at the concluding session was to tell other women about it all! So here’s my start for that, and I’ll be writing a dedicated post or two over the next week.

  7. Yay everybody! Kim, I know someone else nice, feminist, and studenty who is looking for housemate(s) in your part of the world. You want me to put you in touch?

I just got back from the Coogee meet up. It was lovely to see/meet everyone! And quite a lot of knitting and crocheting happened.

    • Today I caught up with our Helen and a few Geek Feminist folks for brunch before getting on the plane back home to Sydney. There was quite a lot of knitting going on there as well!

  8. I had a great time at the Midsumma Carnival handing out safe-sex packages. It always has such a friendly atmosphere. I feel good knowing that someone, somewhere is thoroughly enjoying a blueberry flavoured dental dam because of me.
@Chally – If she likes cats (and it’s understandable if she doesn’t), then that would be rather lovely. My email is my name with no spaces, at gmail.

  9. @tigtog Huzzah! Maybe Kyle will disappear from the media over the next few years.
Had a great deal of fun at the Sydney meetup, got to see a few hoydens again and met a bunch of interesting people. I will be meeting with a fabulous feminist friend tomorrow who I haven’t seen for a long time, so it’ll be a great week. 🙂

  10. Worked my second last day on Friday, going to get the public holiday and work my last day the friday after that. Time to move, and apply for a lease without an income , and apply for jobs without an address.
Isn’t the “Doesn’t speak for me” thread going along swimmingly?

  11. Quote of the week: “Only the elites despise earning money”. Oh, American politics.
@YetAnotherMatt – What a difficult situation. I hope you find a house/job combination soon. (Tugboat captain? Zookeeper? Live-in au pair? Adventuring balloonist?)
