The Whovians are taking over the Xmas thread, so I’m moving the discussion here.
So, what’s the story with Clara then?

I have no idea what’s up with Clara, but I’m really looking forward to finding out! 🙂
Also, how much do I want a spinoff with Madame Vastra and Jenny? I WANT IT THIS MUCH. Obviously, that would mean that the Moff would be doing TWO different adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, but I find that I have no problem with this. 😀 (Also, I love that the Moff has basically openly stated now that he believes that Holmes and Watson were married — if it wasn’t already obvious from Sherlock!)
I hope we see much more of Madam Vastra and Jenny in the 2013 episodes 🙂
My speculation on Clara: Jenny perhaps? It’s an awful long time since she took off adventuring on her lonesome, and maybe she’s decided to learn more about Timelording?
Please move my comments over, in car and typing on tiny phone keyboard.
OK Mindy, will do.
Copy-paste of Mindy’s comment from Open Thread:
****spoilers****
Did I miss something with River Song in the last series, is that over now too? The URST in this special confused me somewhat.
I’ll also paste in my own comment from the Open Thread: I love it that Clara keeps doing just not quite exactly what the Doctor expects.
Hmmm, I hadn’t thought of Jenny. I have been hoping for a while that they will bring her back. I have a feeling they’ve forgotten her though, along with whatever caused the TARDIS to explode in the first season of 11.
Also another vote for Madam Vastra and Jenny. And the Sontaran.
And was it just me or did the memory worm look so corny it could have been a prop from the old series?
Straxx was delicious – his twinkling eyes when he teased The Doctor! My 6yo niece thought that “the funny potato head man” was the highlight of the show.
I love Clara! So excited to find out more about her.
Vastra is soooo cool, too. Would love a Madame Vastra and Jenny spin off. It was so nice to sigh and think, “Yay, two women in a relationship, no more hetero Ponds worship.” I liked Amy and Rory, I just didn’t appreciate Moffatt’s syrupy marriage stuff.
Also, I love that the Moff has basically openly stated now that he believes that Holmes and Watson were married
I’d rather see real gay characters than slash-goggles, especially ones that erase female characters. (Or was that a joke based on the idea of Doyle partly basing Holmes on Vastra; if so, imagine a sheepish smiley at the end of this sentence).

I’m with you there though. And I do like that idea that Doyle based Holmes on Vastra. (She doesn’t even have to choose between smart and idiot Watsons, she has one of each).
I love Strax’s combinations of abuse and reassurance: “Try to remain calm, human scum.”
But my favourite moment was the “one word” scene.
I’ll also paste in my own comment from the Open Thread: I love it that Clara keeps doing just not quite exactly what the Doctor expects.
I’ll copy my reply over then: I also find it interesting that despite Vashta calling it his “usual impact,” I don’t think anyone’s had quite the same at-first-sight pull to get involved* with the Doctor as she did.
* In any sense, I mean, not just flirting.
I saw a theory on another thread that she was a Jaggeroth scattered through time the way Scaroth was (for those unfamilar with OldWho, a spacetime explosion blew him to bits in a temporal sense, so multiple versions of him were living at different periods of history).
I don’t think Clara could be a Jaggeroth, otherwise Dalek Oswin’s self-image wouldn’t be human (and Jaggeroth look decidedly nonhuman, so she couldn’t be mistaken about it). However, the scattering through time is still a possibility.
The same thing about her self-image being human lets out the Rani I think, I doubt Moffat will repeat the idea of a Time Lord turning human.
The Silence resorting to Plan C is an easy guess, perhaps too easy. (On the subject of returning evil Time Lords, I’m hoping Omega is behind the Silence).
My favourite line was absolutely, “Hello. I am a lizard woman from the dawn of time, and this is my wife.”
Also, are there any other Babylon 5 fans out there who get a serious Na’Toth vibe from Madam Vastra?
My theory on Clara: she’s a slightly-non-human recurring-point-in-time-and-space who keeps popping up in the Doctor’s personal timeline either as a warning (a la the cracks in time from the Tardis’ explosion) or a projection of a super-powerful Time Lord-esque being who needs the Doctor to do something.
Or she’s a recurring doppelganger a la Katherine/Elena in Vampire Diaries.
Either way: more Oswin/Clara!
[comment redacted – I put it on the wrong thread! ~ tt]
I don’t know what Clara is but she might be like Scaroth from City of Death, separate splinters scattered throughout history.
