Showboating judge?

Why set Phillip Garrido’s bail at $30million except to get a headline? Why not just hold him without bail (as with his spouse Nancy)?

  1. You know, I just this minute scanned the news headlines and had exactly the same thought.

  2. Maybe her lawyers didn’t apply for bail? Or maybe there’s some other legal technical reason. I don’t think we could say without some knowledge of how it works in California.
    In any event, it doesn’t see out of the world to me. He is still on parole for federal crimes, which presumably ups the amount and you hardly want him surprisingly producing the dough through family connections or donations.
