Chivalry

On a whim, I just followed one of the “Related Posts” links at the bottom of today’s Quick Hit from Mindy, and found my way to her earlier link to this post at The Hairpin about a book of poems by Alice Duer Miller, published in 1915.

This short poem caught my eye with such a catching catch that I decided it deserved sharing:

Chivalry

It’s treating a woman politely
As long as she isn’t a fright:
It’s guarding the girls who act rightly,
If you can be judge of what’s right;
It’s being—not just, but so pleasant;
It’s tipping while wages are low;
It’s making a beautiful present,
And failing to pay what you owe.

  1. Wow, so much has changed since 1915. Not.

  2. There should be a little picture of that book of poems in the dictionary, Homer Simpson style, as the definition of ‘awesome’

  3. I’m in love with your blog and your writing. I just wrote something on hip- hop and feminism and would love to hear what you think!
