  • Otterday! And Open Thread

Please feel free to use this thread to natter about anything your heart desires. Is there anything great happening in your life? Anything you want to get off your chest? Reading a good book (or a bad one)? Anything in the news that you’d like to discuss? What have you created lately? Commiserations, felicitations, temptations, contemplations, speculations?

  • BFTP | Bless: they’re still confused about weather vs climate

The original version of this post was published almost exactly 4 years ago (2010-01-11) when extreme storms and snow caused havoc in Western Europe. Given that many of the same “so where’s your global warming now?” gotcha tropes are flying around again since the severe cold weather hit Northern America this week, it seems like it needs repeating.

  • Media Circus: man who shouldn’t be in govt gets way too much attention edition

Photo of Australian Parliament House (APH) in Canberra

And the Abbott government is loving that everybody’s looking at Bernardi instead of keeping an eye on them. C’mon, we’re smarter than this, right?

What news story/commentary/analysis has grabbed your attention lately?

  • Bora disappoints (again)

Unfollowing Bora by Dana Hunter at Freethought Blogs summarises all that’s wrong about Bora Zivkovic’s blithe attempt to just come back to science blogging as if nothing ever happened.

  • NYE Open Thread

In the foreground we see the silhouettes of seated people, watching the fireworks show in the distance

Another bonus Open thread for the festive season. Share your current delights and frustrations, your best/worst bits of 2013, your hopes/fears for 2014, or anything else you want to talk about right now.

  • There can be no healing at Nottoway Plantation

In yet another example of white feminist cluelessness, Singer Ani DiFranco will hold her annual songwriting retreat this year on Nottoway Plantation in Louisiana. Righteous Retreat Song Camp is billed as a feminist songwriting retreat, and DiFranco’s choice to hold the event at this locale has drawn ire from Black women who note the offensiveness of the location.

  • BFTP: If more Hollywood producers read Bob the Angry Flower

This is a Lazy Summer repost of an old post, with some highlights from comments on the original post added, since they add to the snarkfest. Given that the Abbott government seems to be full of “rationalist” policies owing more than a small debt to Objectivist Libertarianism, it seemed like a good time to remind folks what unregulated government of prime movers for prime movers would actually look like.

  • National Leftovers Day

What to do with the food that’s still in the fridge on Boxing Day? Too much of it these days tends to get thrown out after the gathering is over because it’s too much to get through before it goes off, and that’s a terrible waste.

  • Doctor Who 2013 Xmas Special Thread

The Doctor and Clara are standing in snow at what looks like the mouth of a cave. The Doctor is holding the head of a Cyberman, behind them we see an intact Cyberman, a Dalek, a Weeping Angel, one of The Silence, and many more figures, weapons and spacecraft in the background which are not clearly distinguishable. There are many high-powered beams looking dangerous too.

Australian Whovian tragics don’t get an early (ie only a few hours after the UK) peek this year. We have to wait for 7:30pm on Boxing Day like any old muggle! How on earth will we manage?

  • Today in White Privilege: Intent, Noticing, Examining

Nothing induces more rage in others than your taking what you do not deserve and not even noticing.
