One for the annals of classic rebuttals

Lots of people in skeptical circles have linked to this, so many of you may have seen it already. Marvellous effort from Cristina in Romania, pointing out that not only is the latest attempt by American fundagelicals to demonise Darwin full of the usual ignorance of actual science, misrepresentations of science and outright falsehoods about Darwin and science, it’s full of double standards and blatant hypocrisy as well.

Synopsis of Fundagelical agenda (featuring 80s sitcom star Kirk Cameron!): the “Origin into Schools” project –

In a video posted recently to YouTube, Cameron lays out a plan to subvert ‘Darwin Day’ on November 22, 2009 — a date marking the 150th anniversary of the publishing of Charles Darwin’s “Origin of Species.” Cameron says that he and like-minded activists plan to deliver 50,000 copies of an altered version of Darwin’s book to students at dozens of U.S. universities.

Cameron explains that this “very special” edition of the “Origin of Species” will include an introduction explaining “Adolf Hitler’s undeniable connection” to the theory of evolution, and highlighting “Darwin’s racism” and “his disdain for women.” Cameron’s edition also exposes the “many hoaxes” of evolutionary theory, while presenting a “balanced view of Creationism.

They are presenting this as a generous act, offering students “both sides” so that they can “make their own judgement”. As Cristina says, just how inoffensive would they find it atheists were giving out free copies of the Christian bible with a “special introduction” explaining Hitler’s undeniable connection to Christianity, how Christianity has been used to justify racist slavery and sexist subjugation of women, etc etc etc?

Liss has more, including a transcript of the Cameron/Comfort video.

Lots more at Scanners, (including lots of links to background stories and similar debunkings of the Cameron/Confort claims as in Cristina’s video), and you can download Ray Comfort’s 50-page new introduction to Origin here.

  1. I saw this at Womanist Musings; Cristina rocks (her other videos include an excellent three part series on how to be a good creationist).

  2. In another of her videos – My “relationship” with conflicts – she says that one reaction she has to fundie arguments is to get sarcastic:
”But you can’t have morals without God. If you don’t have the Bible to guide you, where do you take your morality from?”
“Well, basically, when I don’t attend gymnastics classes – because you know, I’m Romanian, and all Romanians take gymnastics lessons – it’s a rule. So when I don’t do that, I take morality lessons. Everybody in the atheist cult does it.”

She then goes on to say:
This is not a good way to react, because some of these people actually believe me.”

  3. This vid by the same person has made me want to scream. Since, you know, her “hypothetical” situation of a woman working full-time to support her unemployed husband is kinda my life.
And then she goes on to explain that it’s impossible for women to rape men, and that men rape women because their straight.
    *sigh*

  4. Sighs too. (In agreement with you, I mean).

  5. Is there a transcript of Cristina’s video anywhere, by any chance? I’ve been thinking of every possible way I could try to Google for one, but have been having no luck.
