Discombobulation: How to Stop a Geek in their Tracks

Show hir this:

text reads *Do Or Do Not. There Is No Try* - misattributed to Dumbledore - image is of Sir Ian McKellen playing Gandalf in LOTR

Via Mary on Twitter, who adds:

After viewing that image, your geek will be frozen in place, trying to explain all that is wrong with it, while you make a clean getaway.

Awesome! *makes note to self to not forget*

UPDATE: Apologies to all folks using reader software, I only just realised that I bollixed the image alt tags earlier when I published this by not converting quotes in the description to HTML entities, so they haven’t been showing for all this time.

  1. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
    <span class='wp-smiley wp-emoji wp-emoji-heart' title='<3

  2. No clean getaway for me: “Well, it’s kind of true. They all fulfil the same role within a mythic narrative. What I’m saying is: I’m nerdier than that — I reject Joseph Campell’s hypothesis.”
But I got a better reaction when I referred to Gandalf as from, “uh… you know… the other one.”

    • I think their parallel roles in the mythic narrative is kinda the “now who exactly said what” hook, Jason.
I wonder who else might form a handy discombobulation triad?

  3. Yes but is the original quote Tolstoy or Karl Marx? I’m getting my beardos mixed up.

  4. Liam my 7 y.o. would be horrified that you thought it was Tolstoy or Karl Marx.

  5. “There is no try.”
Are you sure it’s not Gregan?

  6. You know, Mindy, you’re right.
It’s quite obviously Moses in the book of Exodus; cursing Egypt and the Dark Wizard Pharaoh with his staff, and demanding the liberation of the house elves.

  7. And now in my head:
When Hermione was in Egypt’s land /(Chorus): LET MY DOBBY GO

  8. Apologies to all folks using reader software, I only just realised that I bollixed the alt tags by not converting quotes in the description to HTML entities, so they haven’t been showing for all this time. About to go and add this explanation of my lapse to the main body of the text.

  9. Ooh, just saw something over on Art of Trolling, on the thread where the pic above seems to have originated, and I’m going to see whether I can reproduce it here:

You should be seeing a reasonable approximation in ASCII art of the Picard facepalm there. Not meant to apply to anybody here, I just like it, and wish I knew a better way to force monospace representation of text. Maybe I should add an ascii-art class to the stylesheet?

  10. A Google search overwhelmingly brings up this was a Yoda from Star Wars statement, not Dumbledore.

Yoda was trying to get Luke to lift his shift out of the swamp with telekinesis when this statement was made.

    • Indeed, you are correct. That’s why its WRONGNESS freezes the geek in those tracks.
Sir Ian McKellen never played Dumbledore, either.

  11. @ Liam

He would probably accept that explanation. Otherwise he would want to know who Dumbledore and the bearded man were. *Geek parenting fail*.

[ETA: Oohh, I got moderated. I wonder why. At least I can let myself out. Bwahahahahahaha]

  12. I woke up early this morning and couldn’t get back to sleep. Here, have another memeclash:

  13. And now – kidlit memeclash!

  14. Late to the party, but I made two:

  15. Gosh Angus next you’ll be telling me that there is no Santa Claus and that the tooth fairy is retired. At least I still have the Easter Bunny 😉
    [ETA: I love Sir Ian]
